Orientation and Onboarding

  • Two-hour onboarding covering Meditech and local quality measures
  • One shadow shift at each main site
  • One shadow shift at any Free-Standing Emergency Department (FSED); all FSEDs operate similarly

Candidate Requirements

  • Board Certification: ABEM required for Doctors Regional
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years Emergency Department experience or Family Medicine with Emergency Medicine fellowship (for FSEDs)

Credentialing

  • Emergency privileges: Yes
  • Case logs: Required

Hospital/Unit Details

  • Beds: 18 beds at Doctors Regional
  • Daily admissions:
    • FSEDs: 10% admission rate
    • Doctors Regional: 20% admission rate
  • Consults: Yes, multiple per day
  • Patient population:
    • Rockport: Elderly, seasonal (Winter Texans)
    • Northwest: Elderly, nursing home, rural population
    • Portland: Younger, mixed demographics
  • Trauma designation:
    • Northwest and Doctors Regional: Level IV trauma centers
    • Portland FSED and Rockport FSED: Not trauma centers
  • Acuity: High; physicians must be skilled in:
    • Central line placement
    • Intubation
    • Dislocation reduction
    • Trauma management
    • STEMI and stroke care
    • OB deliveries
  • Follow-up: Generally not required; feedback provided as needed

Emergency Medicine – Specifics

  • Shift times: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM and 6:00 PM – 6:00 AM
  • Call: Not required
  • Required procedures:
    • Intubations
    • Central line placement
    • Ultrasound use
    • OB delivery
    • Dislocation reduction
    • Chest tube placement
    • Trauma management
    • Laceration repair

Support Staff

  • Doctors Regional: 24-hour APP coverage
  • Northwest: 12-hour APP coverage
  • Portland: 11-hour APP coverage
  • Rockport: 9-hour APP coverage

Patient Volume

  • Doctors Regional: ~80 patients/day
  • Most common cases: Full spectrum of emergency medicine presentations
  • Annual ER admissions:
    • FSEDs: 10%
    • Doctors Regional: 20%
  • Robotics: Not used
  • Callbacks: Not applicable (no call coverage required)
  • Staffing per shift: One Emergency Medicine physician at each site (except Bay Area)
